The Importance of a Beautiful Home

Back when I was in my late twenties I moved in with my then girlfriend and soon to be wife. She was a web designer and had been an artist pretty much her whole life and been shown in a number of galleries both in the US and abroad.

We were moving into what had been her apartment for many years while we were dating. I was nervous about moving in and this was the first time that I would be sharing a living space with a girlfriend. I had a number of girlfriends in the past but it had never progressed to the level where we moved in together.

After I had brought all my boxes and personal items into my new home I found myself feeling somewhat like a cat flying through the air. I was searching for the ground on which to land. Thankfully I had no doubt that my girlfriend would be loving and supportive to my transition I just had no frame of reference on how I would land securely on the floor.

I don’t remember how long it was before we mostly had unpacked my stuff. Here was my clothing in new furniture (I hadn’t had an official dresser). My toothbrush and toothpaste was in a different ‘spot’. I guess I should have mentioned that I have always been a person who likes his ‘spots’ for things. My dishes and silverware were in different places. One of the last things we did was put up the art we did have.

After a majority of the art had been hung around the we came to one bare wall in the living room. I remember distinctly my girlfriend saying, “What would like here? I will paint it.” I was stunned. Here I was in a new environment and I was given an opportunity to make our new home…OURS. While I had intellectually known that art was a powerful concept, this was a reminder of the emotional power it could have. This would be the start of a 17 year relationship which was as much about love as it was art. Also it illustrated to me the value of having beautiful art in one’s home along with the ability to decorate your home as you wish. This is one of the reasons I started Netwanderer — https://www.netwanderer.com . To provide beautiful art, using my late wife’s work, and provide resources on how to economically decorate your living environment.

More on this on future posts.
