Halloween Should be a National Holiday

In our home we celebrate Halloween like it was a national holiday. I am not sure when my wife started her celebration of Halloween but it is still an annual tradition in our home.

Back when we were still dating we might have as many as 80–100 people at our home. We lived in the top floor of a house in Oakland. Our neighbors below us were also in on the festivities.

We had one requirement when you attended our party. You needed to come in a costume of some sort. It need not be an elaborate one but my wife felt one of the unique qualities of Halloween was how it encouraged people to get out of their normal day-to-day pattern. It was a creative expression, even if it was a small one. Our guests could not just put on their typical party attire. They were forced to think out of their comfort zone and typical emotional comfort zone. If you didn’t come in a costume your primary threat was that we would find the drunkest person at the party and have them face paint you. In future years when our party was a bit more family friendly, we would advise guests that we would subject them to a face painting by the youngest person at the party. This requirement seemed to do the trick.
